Importing Multiple Card Meanings at Once

You can import many meanings at once if you have a CSV file full of meanings. You can start by entering data in your preferred spreadsheet software (such as Excel or Google Sheets), then export it as a CSV.

This page features a link to a template you can use to fill in the details.

How to Bulk Import Meanings

  1. Go to Cards Import Page – Click on “Reference” → “Cards” → “IMPORT MULTIPLE MEANINGS” button
  2. Prepare Your CSV File – Download the template from the import page. Your CSV should include columns:
    • card_id (required): The ID number of the card
    • card_name (optional): Human-readable card name for reference
    • is_dignified: “Yes” for upright, “No” for reversed
    • meaning: Your interpretation
Important: Don’t alter the card_id or card_name columns. The system uses the ID to match meanings to cards. The name is just for your reference.
  3. Select Source – Choose which source these meanings come from. See the Sources header in this document for details.
  4. Upload CSV File – Click “Browse…” and select your CSV file. Only CSV format is accepted.
  5. Mark as Draft (Optional) – Check the “These are drafts” checkbox if you want these meanings to be draft status initially. You can finalize them later, but it’s kind of a pain to click on every card individually and have to toggle it, so be sure you’ve selected the right value.
  6. Click IMPORT – Click the “IMPORT” button to process your file

CSV Tips

  • Any rows with blank meanings will be skipped
  • Keep your text formatting simple – complex formatting may not import perfectly
  • You can import meanings in batches. For example, import all Major Arcana first, then each suits separately
  • If you import meanings for the same card twice, they’ll both be added (not overwritten)

If you have a published tarot deck with a guidebook, you can paraphrase the meanings into a CSV and import them all at once and tweak them later.
